Students are set for Dr. Seuss Day event

By Chris Sykes, Staff Writer
Tuesday was Read Across America Day at Grove Street School, the annual event set aside around the world to honor and remember the life and work of Theodor Geisel, better known to generations of readers as Dr. Seuss.
Read Across America is a weeklong event sponsored by the National Education Association and its 50 national partner organizations, including Dr. Seuss Enterprises LP, and the American Library Association, that is centered around March 2, Dr. Seuss’ birthday. It is a part of the organization’s year-round literacy campaign designed to motivate children to read by making it fun.
According to the NEA Web site, in the days surrounding March 2, thousands of schools, libraries and community centers participate with reading events to pay homage to the author and get our nation’s students excited about reading. Since its inception in 1997, the event has grown bigger every year and gaining support form educators, politicians and the private sector alike.
Indeed, this year first lady Michelle Obama joined NEA President Dennis Van Roekel and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, along with members of Congress, NEA leaders, and hundreds of local students at the Library of Congress for the national kickoff of NEA’s Read Across America Day on Tuesday. The Library of Congress Center for the Book is a longtime Read Across America partner, offering educators and students great resources at its new Web site, www.read.gov. but locally once again it was library media specialist October Hudley taking the lead at Grove Street Elementary School.

Ms Hudley is doing a wonderful job. I wish more teachers were as dedicated, and as passionate as she is about teaching our children.
