The third annual Komen North Jersey Race for the Cure has been scheduled for April 25 in Essex County Branch Brook Park, Newark.
The race is a series of 5K run/walks designed to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and local community-based breast-health programs for uninsured and underinsured women and men.
The race celebrates breast cancer survivors and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.
Funds raised at last year’s events supported breast health education, screening and treatment support services for women and men at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Saint Barnabas Breast and Lymphedema Centers, Saint Michael’s Medical Center and UMDNJ Medical School.
Honorary chairpersons for the 2010 Komen North Jersey Race for the Cure are Mayor Cory A. Booker of Newark, New Jersey Devils chairman Jeffrey Vanderbeek and Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled and proud to have Mayor Booker, Jeff Vanderbeek and Joe DiVincenzo, three powerhouses committed to positive change, as honorary chairs of our Race for the Cure,” said Deborah Q. Belfatto, executive director of the Komen North Jersey affiliate. “All three have demonstrated a continued commitment to the affiliate and its promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever. “Last year’s race united 10,000 women, men and children from throughout northern New Jersey and beyond for one common cause,” Belfatto continued. “Seventy-five percent of the net funds we raise will stay right here in our nine-county northern New Jersey service region to support critical life-saving programs for our uninsured and underinsured populations. The remaining 25 percent supports research on the national level to find the cures for this disease.”
