Irvington girl among winners of statewide contest

Recently, in recognition of Burn Awareness Week, Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation held the 21st annual Burn Awareness Poster Contest Awards Program to honor children from throughout the state who were selected as this year’s winners.
This year’s poster contest, created to teach youngsters the importance of fire safety and burn prevention, focused on scald prevention.
Among the winners was Montana Anastagia George of Irvington who is a student at St, Michael School in Union.
“This year’s winning posters show that burn injuries, particularly scalds, are preventable by simply becoming aware of the problem and making some small changes in your daily routine,” said Lisa Jones, community educator for The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas, which is New Jersey’s only certified burn-treatment facility.
The top three finishers received a $200, $150 and $100 U.S. Savings Bond, respectively. These winners were Hydia Black of Newark, Anne Cortez of Jersey City and Danielle DeStasio of Toms River. Hydia’s winning entry was also featured on The Burn Center’s 2010 Burn Awareness Week Poster which is distributed to schools and organizations across New Jersey.
In addition, a winner from each county not already represented in the top three was awarded a $50 U.S. Savings Bond.
These winners included Montana Anastagia George of Irvington, Arjun Khatri of Piscataway, Sonya Lopez of Hamilton, Lauren Patetta of Basking Ridge and Raymond Ryerson of Boonton.
