Irvington High School head varsity wrestling coach Kyle Steele has reason to feel excited for the future.
The Blue Knights this season didn’t have any seniors, gaining valuable experience.
“Next year, I am predicting a big year for the guys,” said Steele.
Despite finishing with an 8-13 record, IHS managed to make significant strides.
Leading the Blue Knights were captains Alexander Reeves and Romario Herbert.
Reeves, a junior, enjoyed a stellar season, fashioning a 26-7 mark at the 125-pound weight class. Reeves finished second in the District 10 tournament, falling to Seton Hall Prep standout Lou Mascola in the final, to qualify for the Region 3 tournament. Steele admitted he didn’t know what to expect from Reeves this season, after Reeves missed most of last season due to an ankle injury. But Reeves turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
“He is the ultimate team leader,” said Steele. “He goes 100 percent all the time. He is an outstanding person and a leader. His future looks great.”
Steele also sings the praises of Herbert, who finished with a 22-10 mark at 145 as a sophomore.
“He is going to be somebody special,” said Steele.
