Despite being inexperienced, the Irvington High School varsity wrestling team is enjoying success in the Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division.
The Blue Knights were undefeated in the division entering the week, hoping to clinch the divisional championship at the end of the season.
The Blue Knights also will gear up for the Essex County Tournament on Friday Jan. 27 and Saturday Jan. 28 at Codey Arena in West Orange.
Romario Herbert is considered the Blue Knights’ strongest hope at winning an ECT title, said IHS head coach Kyle Steele. Romario, competing in the 152-pound weight class, boasted a 14-1 record entering the week.
“He is a really skilled and smart athlete,” Steele said. “He put in a lot of work in the offseason and it’s paying off.”
Two other seniors, Joshua Ogbennaya at the 195-pound class, and Edwige Gedeon, at 145, were both 11-4 recently and have good shots at excelling at the ECT, Steele said.
