Rashon Evans can make a strong case at being one of the fastest boys’ runners in the state.
Evans won both the 55-meter dash and the 55-meter hurdles to lead the Irvington High School boys’ varsity indoor track and field team at the NJSIAA Group 3 Championships on Feb. 20 at the Bennett Complex in Toms River. Evans clocked 6.53 in the 55-meter dash and 7.77 in the hurdles.
Teammate Jerrick Oliver also took sixth in the 55-meter dash in 6.74.
With those top-six finishes, the Blue Knights finished third overall with 21 points among the 33 scoring teams. Jackson was first with 40 points and Morristown was second with 30.
The top six finishers in each event qualified for the NJSIAA Meet of Champions on Feb. 27 at the Bennett Complex.
The Blue Knights also had other MOC wild-card qualifiers. They include Wilvenson Baptiste in the boys’ 55-meter dash, Brianna Lovell in the girls’ high jump and the boys’ 4x400-meter relay team of Evans, Bernard Bailey, Kevin Gordon and Baptiste.
The IHS boys’ team won the team titles at the Essex County and NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 meets this season.
