Irvington Herald Developers: ‘We’re in Irvington for the long haul’

A few weeks ago the township and its partners in redevelopment, Brand New Day Inc., broke ground on a new housing project in the East Ward that should bring 13 new single family homes to Irvington’s East Ward.

Irvington Herald Race for the Cure is now organizing for April 25

The third annual Komen North Jersey Race for the Cure has been scheduled for April 25 in Essex County Branch Brook Park, Newark.
The race is a series of 5K run/walks designed to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and local community-based breast-health programs for uninsured and underinsured women and men.
The race celebrates breast cancer survivors and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.

An earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter Scale that was 100-times stronger than the one that killed 200,000 people on the island of Haiti hit Chile at 3:44 a.m. on Feb. 27. The death toll in that country has risen nearly to 700.

Irvington Herald Steele receives 7 years for kickbacks

Former Mayor Michael Steele was sentenced to seven years in state prison Monday by Superior Court Judge Stephen B. Rubin in Hunterdon County.
Attorney General Paula T. Dow and Criminal Justice Director Stephen J. Taylor announced Monday that Steele was sentenced to state prison for rigging school district contracts and taking thousands of dollars in kickbacks as business administrator for the Irvington Board of Education. High School Sports Youth soccer coach receives national award

Nduna Gora has a strong passion for soccer.
When the Trinidad & Tobago native moved from Brooklyn to Irvington eight years ago, he wanted to spruce up interest in the sport.

High School Sports IHS wrestling has bright future

Irvington High School head varsity wrestling coach Kyle Steele has reason to feel excited for the future.
The Blue Knights this season didn’t have any seniors, gaining valuable experience.
“Next year, I am predicting a big year for the guys,” said Steele.
Despite finishing with an 8-13 record, IHS managed to make significant strides.
Leading the Blue Knights were captains Alexander Reeves and Romario Herbert.

High School Sports Jersey Heat Track to hold Fund-raiser

The Irvington-based non-profit Jersey Heat Track Club will hold a Skate Afternoon Fund-raiser on March 13 from 3-6 p.m. at Branch Brook Park, Roller Skating Center, located at 7th Avenue and Clifton Avenue in Newark.
The cost is $14, which includes admission, skate rental, one glow item, five game tokens, a slice of pizza and a drink.
Advanced ticket sales only. Absolutely no tickets will be sold at the door.
The funds raised will help pay the indoor and outdoor season expenses.

High School Sports Evans enjoys terrific track season

Irvington High School boys’ indoor track and field standout Rashon Evans enjoyed a stellar season.
Evans, a senior, is the first athlete in school history to make the finals in two running events at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Meet of Champions.

High School Sports IHS' Evans wins two events at State track meet

Rashon Evans can make a strong case at being one of the fastest boys’ runners in the state.
Evans won both the 55-meter dash and the 55-meter hurdles to lead the Irvington High School boys’ varsity indoor track and field team at the NJSIAA Group 3 Championships on Feb. 20 at the Bennett Complex in Toms River. Evans clocked 6.53 in the 55-meter dash and 7.77 in the hurdles.
