High School Sports IHS boys' hoop team advances to ECT quarterfinals

Deshawn Lewis scored 18 points and Al-Jahaad Bradford had 17 points and eight assists to lead the sixth-seeded Irvington High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 72-45 win over No. 11 seed Central in the round of 16 of the Essex County Tournament last Saturday at IHS.

High School Sports IHS trackster Dashana Ransome is county champ

Dashana Ransome captured the girls’ 55-meter hurdles to lead the Irvington High School indoor track and field teams at the Essex County Championships last Sunday at Seton Hall University in South Orange.

The IHS girls’ team finished fourth overall in the girls’ team standings among the 18 scoring teams based on top-six finishes in the events. Newark Tech won the girls’ team crown.

Dashana’s sister, Denesha, took second in the 55-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash.

High School Sports IHS girls’ basketball team comes up short in the ECT

The Irvington High School girls’ varsity basketball team, seeded 11th, lost at No. 6 seed Newark Tech, 63-53, in the round of 16 of the Essex County Tournament last Saturday Feb. 4 in Newark.

Irvington Herald NAACP will discuss talk by Gov. Christie

Tonight, the Irvington Unit of the NAACP will hold its monthly meeting where the main topic of discussion will be a report of Gov. Christopher Christie’s appearance at Christian Love Baptist Church two weeks ago.

High School Sports IHS wrestlers enjoy success at ECT

Irvington High School varsity wrestlers Romario Herbert, Joshua Ogbennaya, Nehehima Shury and Edwige Gedeon enjoyed outstanding performances at the Essex County Tournament last Friday and Saturday Jan. 27-28 at Codey Arena in West Orange.

Herbert took fourth place in the 152-pound weight class.

Herbert lost to Ian Chauncey of Bloomfield, 5-2, in the consolation.

The Irvington High School girls’ varsity basketball team received the No. 11 seed in the Essex County Tournament. The Lady Blue Knights will host either No. 22 seed Livingston or No. 23 seed West Side on or by Feb. 2. The game beween Livingston and West Side must be played by Saturday Jan. 28

High School Sports IHS' Simmons honored during 'National Girls and Women in Sports Day'

Irvington High School student-athlete Maria Simmons was among the honorees at the the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association 26th annual statewide celebration of “National Girls and Women In Sports Day.” at Seton Hall University this past Sunday Jan. 22.

The event is particularly significant this year as 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the landmark Title IX legislation. The theme of the event is: “Title IX at 40: In It for the Long Run.”

Despite being inexperienced, the Irvington High School varsity wrestling team is enjoying success in the Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division.

The Blue Knights were undefeated in the division entering the week, hoping to clinch the divisional championship at the end of the season.

High School Sports Morris hired by Washington Redskins

Ten days after being fired as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Raheem Morris was hired as the defensive backs coach for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League.

Morris, a 1994 Irvington High School graduate, coached the NFL Buccaneers for the past three seasons. He was fired by the Bucs on Jan. 2 after Tampa Bay finished with a 4-12 record. Morris was 17-31 in three seasons with the Bucs.
