AKOMA NTOSO CELEBRATION
The Newark Museum and Oiada International invite you to our Akoma Ntoso Celebration for Black History Month 2012 on Sunday, February 19th from 3pm - 6pm with a reception from 5pm - 6pm EST at The Newark Museum. Akoma Ntoso is an Adrinka symbol meaning “linked hearts”. The Celebration will link the residents of Ghana and New Jersey for a “live” face to face video conference. Patrons will assemble at The Akoma Ntoso Cultural Center (ANCC) in Cape Coast, Ghana and at The Newark Museum in New Jersey.
We are celebrating African and African-American heroes on both continents and will be honoring their contributions to our respective communities. The honorees in the US will be Newark City Council President Donald Payne Jr.; Mayor Wayne Smith of Irvington, NJ; and East Orange Councilwoman Andrea McPhatter. In Ghana, the honorees will include Presidential Candidate Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom,of Ghana and Maxwell Jumah, a member of Parliament , Ghana and Founder of
Africa Newark Organization.
The Celebration will feature art and music from both continents. In Ghana, we will feature the work of a local Ghanaian sculptor. In Newark, the Newark Museum will showcase its African and African-American galleries. Audiences in the US and Ghana will be able to ask questions and comment on the sculptures and exhibits. We will also enjoy live music from the US and Ghana. Thanks to our corporate sponsor, Polycom, this event will be broadcast live worldwide via the internet.
